WOOD CHIPS

Wood chips are excellent as a mulch layer on the soil under the tree, and serve as nutrition for the underlying tree roots and the entire tree ecosystem. Wood chips contribute to good soil structure and rich microlife over time. In addition, wood chips as mulch reduce water evaporation, moderate temperature differences, inhibit weed growth and minimize damage from, among other things, lawn mowing.
But do not place the mulch layer against the trunk, because adequate air circulation is necessary to prevent bark rot.
Fresh wood chips require nitrogen to decompose, a nutrient that tree roots also need, so don't use too many wood chips, because then they will compete with the tree roots for nitrogen.
It is actually best to let them decompose before using them as mulch. This will reduce the nitrogen need and allow the nutrients to be more easily absorbed by the roots.
